Frequently Asked Questions

PROPERTY LINE SURVEY FAQS

What is a Class I (one) Survey?

The Rhode Island State Board of Registration for Professional Land Surveyors has

developed standards for different accuracies of surveys.  A Class I Survey is most

accurate and precise standard defined by the said standards.  This is typically what is

required by city/town departments for site development or parcel subdivision.  Please

visit the RI Division of Design Professionals website for more information at: http://www.bdp.state.ri.us/

How much does a survey cost?

Typically, each piece of land has a different cost associated with it based on size,

shape, location, and history of the parcel to be surveyed.

Flood Elevation FAQs

Why do I need Flood Insurance?

Flood Insurance allows homeowners whose dwelling or accessory structures fall

within a flood zone to be covered if damages occur from flood related events.

Is it possible to reduce the amount I pay for Flood Insurance?

Yes, depending on the elevation of your structure, you may be able to reduce or

eliminate the cost for flood insurance.

How can I determine if my house is out of a flood zone?

The first thing to do is to visit FEMAs Map Service Center website:

https://msc.fema.gov/portal. You can enter your home address and the map will

zoom into your area. If it shows as your structure within a flood zone, then the

next thing to do is have a Flood Elevation Certificate filled out. This requires an

onsite survey performed by a licensed land surveyor to determine elevations on

several features of your structure.

Planning & Zoning FAQS

When would I have to submit for Development Plan Review?

Submissions are required if: commercial and industrial construction and/or

expansion is proposed, or any mill conversion project.

Why would I need a site plan showing existing/proposed conditions?

Most towns and cities require that any type of map showing dimensions to

property lines from existing or proposed structures be performed by licensed

land surveyors to ensure the correct location of property lines and building

locations.
